Tilt, touch or buttons: picking racing controls

Tilt, touch or buttons: picking racing controls

September 15, 2026 · Lena Hoffmann

Mobile racing lives and dies on controls, and the default setting is rarely the best one. The first thing I do in any racer is open the control options and experiment.

Tilt steering feels immersive but gets exhausting on long sessions and struggles when your bus hits a bump. It shines in short arcade bursts where precision matters less than feel.

Touch steering, where you press left and right zones, is more reliable and easier on your wrists. It's my default for anything with tight corners, like Skyforge Riders, where a missed turn costs real time.

Button layouts give the most control but clutter the screen. On a small phone they can hide the track. On a tablet they're often the best choice.

The point is to try all of them before deciding a game handles badly. Half the racers I nearly dropped got much better after two minutes in the settings menu.
