Five tower defence mistakes beginners keep making

April 10, 2026 · Lena Hoffmann

Most people lose tower defence games for the same handful of reasons, and almost all of them are fixable. After reviewing dozens of these games, the patterns are hard to miss.

The biggest one is building for the current wave instead of the next few. Enemies change type and speed as you progress, so a wall of single-target towers falls apart the second a swarm shows up. Always keep one answer for groups and one for tanks.

Second, people over-invest in new towers when upgrading existing ones is cheaper and stronger. Read the upgrade tree before you spend. Often a fully upgraded cheap tower beats a shiny expensive one.

Third, ignoring map geometry. Chokepoints and long paths are free damage. Place your heaviest hitters where enemies spend the most time on screen.

Finally, panic spending during a wave. Pause, breathe, look at what's leaking through, then react. Most games let you plan calmly if you stop reacting to every single unit.
